Rory Cowan
Prior to founding Lionbridge in 1996, Rory Cowan was executive vice president and member of the management committee for R.R. Donnelley & Sons. He also was chief executive officer of Stream International Inc., a multi-billion dollar division. He joined R.R. Donnelley in 1988 as senior vice president of the Documentation Services Group, and later became group president. Prior to Donnelley, he was president and chief executive officer of CSA Press of Hudson, Mass., a 1986 acquisition of R.R. Donnelley. He also held positions at Compugraphic Corporation, in Wilmington, Mass., and London, England.
Rory currently serves on the Invoke Solutions Board of Directors. He is on the Board of the American Electronics Association (AEA) and chairs its India Work Group Committee. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Deerfield Academy. In addition, he was Chairman of Interleaf until its sale to Broadvision; Chairman of FairMarket until its sale to eBay; Chairman of NewsEdge Corporation until its sale to Thompson; and sat on the Board of Webline until its sale to Cisco. He received his A.B. and M.B.A. from Harvard University.

Mark Lancaster
Mark Lancaster is chairman and chief executive officer of SDL, which he founded in 1992 after having identified the need for a high-level service provider for the globalization of software. He was a founder director of LISA (Localization Industry Standards Association) with which he continues his involvement. Mark graduated with an HND in electrical and electronic engineering and was employed as a design engineer at Satchwell Control Systems. He then progressed his career as a project manager at Lotus Development Corporation and later was the international development director with Ashton-Tate. He is responsible for the strategic development of SDL. |

Freed, Adam
Adam Freed has been Google's director of international product
management since January 2004. Adam manages the teams principally
responsible for localization and the development of Google's
international products. Some recent highlights of Google's global
products are Gmail in 28 languages and AdWords in 41 languages and 58
currencies.
Prior to taking on responsibilities in product management, Adam was
director, international online sales and operations at Google. From
2002 to 2004, he set up Google's online advertising operations in
London, Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo and Sydney. He also established Google's
multilingual online operations center in Dublin.
Before joining Google, Adam was an Emmy-award winning journalist
covering technology and politics at NBC and independent television
stations in California and New Jersey. He was also a news producer at
NHK, Japan Broadcasting Company.
Adam earned a BA, Magna Cum Laude, in linguistics from Harvard
University and a Master's degree from Yale Law School. Adam speaks nine
languages. |

In her last client-side role as globalization manager for Ariba (formerly FreeMarkets), she managed three cost centers for the Global Sourcing Services group — including globalization services. This globalization approach at Ariba yielded measurably faster turnaround times, increased quality and contained costs over three calendar year outsourcing budgets. This model remains in operation today. |

Renato Beninatto is a partner at Common Sense Advisory, Inc., a research and consulting firm specializing in localization and globalization. A corporate strategist and international business consultant, Renato has more than 20 years of executive-level experience in the localization industry and has served most recently as vice president and director of Alpnet Inc. and Berlitz GlobalNET, respectively. He is a member of the San Diego Software Industry Council and chair of its Global Markets Business Interest Group and currently serves on the localization advisory board of Austin Community College in Texas. |

Brown, Orlagh
After graduating from Dublin City University with a B.A in applied languages, Orlagh commenced her career in localization with Corel Corporation Ireland where she held various positions from Project Coordinator to International Product Manager. After five years with Corel, Orlagh became the General Manager of the Irish subsidiary of Parametric Technology Corporation with primary responsibilities for globalization and localization of training materials. Orlagh now lives in Woodinville, Washington and is currently the Localization Manager for Microsoft Learning. Orlagh and her team in Dublin and Redmond manage the localization of Microsoft Certified Professional exams, assessments, instructor led and eLearning courseware.

Caesar, Matthias
Matthias Caesar studied mathematics and computer science at University Dortmund and University College Dublin and joined the localization industry in 1994. Since then he has been acted as a tools and process trainer, project manager and since 1999, managing director of Locatech GmbH in Germany. Additional duties include begin a board member and General Manager of LCJ EEIG, a group of four localization companies in Europe. Locatech is a founding member of LCJ (founded in 1999.) Matthias has also served as a board member of TILP (The Institute of Localisation Professionals, Dublin) and as deputy president and international officer of JCI Dortmund (Junior Chamber International) between 2000 and 2004.

Cárdenas, Michael
Michael Cárdenas is President and Founder of Local Concept, an international corporation with 20 years' experience (that's 140 in dog years!) in technical translation and localization. Based in San Diego, Michael, who has a J.D., has taken Local Concept from a small translation company to a full-service content management solution corporation servicing clients around the world. Michael is an active member of the Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA), the Computer and Electronics Marketing Association (CEMA), the San Diego Software Industry Council (SDSIC) and the American Translators Association (ATA). He serves on the board of the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). He is a frequent speaker at international conferences, government agencies and universities. An active speaker on localization, Michael travels the globe addressing best practices in the industry. He has made presentations to the international audiences at LISA, SDSIC, EMA and the ATA. He also coordinated an international conference on tools and technology to help do more, faster and cheaper.

Carter, Daniel
Daniel Carter is an industry veteran with over twenty years on both the client and supplier side. He has worked for Microsoft as the group localization manager for operating systems and hardware products. He founded and ran his own localization company, International Software Products, for over a decade. He was one of the founders and has served on the GALA Board for the past five years and is the deputy president of TILP. Daniel is currently a consultant for both industry buyers and suppliers helping companies with their international business strategy, production process, vendor selection, marketing, and sales tactics and execution. He has published numerous articles and in 1992 published one of the first books on localization. |

As vice president of localization at PTC, Karen is responsible for product localization as well as localization support for global services, technical support and marketing. During the past five years she has implemented a complete localization solution for PTC, including an internationalization program, development of localization tools for emerging technologies, effective outsourcing partnerships and creation of a globally distributed localization testing team. She manages a localization group of 60 people located in the US, India, China and Japan. |

Crowder, Tim
Tim Crowder has amassed a wealth of technical expertise over his 18-year career within technology. He began his career as a computer college instructor, served as an MIS director and over the last eight years has consulted within the area of knowledge management (KM) while working with multinational corporations. He has published white papers and written extensively on the challenges and technical aspects of translating knowledge management into workable solutions. Tim also works closely within the community of KM practitioners to develop new technologies. He currently serves as the senior program manager of KM for Symantec Corporation. |

She was previously the founder and CEO of a leading translation and localization company which was acquired by a Nasdaq-quoted US services company and subsequently by SDL. She is co-founder of the Benelux Language Tools Forum. She has 15 years experience in the language business.

Dillinger, Mike
Mike Dillinger, Ph.D., a California-based content management consultant, works with enterprise clients to troubleshoot and optimize their authoring and translation processes. An experienced technical writer, editor, interpreter and translator, he has also done more than 20 years of research and teaching on the reading, writing and translation of technical documents, work that spans four continents and seven languages. Mike also helps language technology vendors to design, develop and promote new functionality for content management tools. He has been developing machine translation and related technologies at Logos Corporation, Global Words Technologies, Spoken Translation, Transclick, the United Nations University and other institutions for almost 10 years. |

Arta Doci is Software Localization Engineer for AVAYA INC. The focus of her work is globalization engineering, i.e. global readiness for voice applications, multilingual terminology in new global markets, quality issues as related to globalization, and automation testing for localized software. Arta is also working as part-time lecturer at the University of Colorado, Denver where she has been teaching software engineering by leading students through all the stages of the software process to deliver complex software products. Prior experience includes software development, testing, and many aspects of software quality. |

Edwards, Tom
Tom Edwards is a geographer and global content strategist currently acting as the principal consultant and owner of Englobe, a geostrategy consultancy for global businesses. Prior to his current role, Tom served at Microsoft for over 13 years as a cartographer, geographic consultant and later as its senior geopolitical strategist in a unique geopolitical strategy team and role he created. In that capacity he researched and developed key content policies, provided consultation on geopolitical issues affecting all levels of Microsoft business as well as subsidiaries and defined the concept of "geopolitical quality." He has a B.A. in geography and certificate in cartography (CSU Long Beach) and an M.A. in geography (University of Washington). He is completing his Ph.D. in geography (UW, 2006) with a research focus on the role of IT in virtually extending national sovereignty and influencing perceptions thereof. Tom has a keen interest in interactive gaming as a confluence and reflection of real and alternate geopolitical and cultural realities. While a strong advocate for improving geographic literacy, particularly within the business communities, he is a member of several professional organizations and has been a presenter at numerous conferences, businesses and universities as well as a part-time geography instructor at the univeristy level. Tom was awarded Chartered Geographer status by the Royal Geographical Society in 2004. |

Heyn, Matthias
Matthias Heyn has an M.A. in linguistics and information science. He joined TRADOS in 1992, and until 1995 he worked as software engineer in the area of sentence alignment and translation memory systems and contributed to the TRADOS object-oriented class library. In 1995, he founded TRADOS Benelux S.A. in Brussels. In 1997, he received the largest contract in translation tools history between the the European Union and TRADOS involving more than 2000 translators. In 1998, he founded TRADOS Japan in Tokyo and headed the TRADOS Asia-Pacific operations, ensuring TRADOS Asian language support. In 2000, he moved to Seattle to work as executive VP of the TRADOS Internet Business Unit that initiated the TRADOS translation process management solutions. In 2002, he moved to Stuttgart to manage TRADOS Germany and is now VP of business consulting for SDL International. |

Gordon Husbands has more than 22 years' experience in successful international sales, consulting and business management, dealing with large global companies within the IT, telecoms and service industries. He has worked for British Aerospace, Thorn EMI, GEC and Digital Equipment.
Gordon has been involved in the communications localization business since 1995, has had several papers published on communicating in a global and multicultural environment and is a frequent panel member at international marketing and localization conferences. He is presently a board member and vice president of sales and marketing at marketing communications localization specialist Wordbank.

Marc Johnson is the general manager of Translations.com’s Oregon operations. He joined TerraPacific in 1990 as a project manager. In 1995, he became a full-time employee of Hewlett-Packard Company as a localization engineer. In 1997, he rejoined the company as CIO of Oregon operations. Currently, Marc is responsible for production, profitability, and general operations. He has lived in Asia and Europe and speaks Japanese and French. Marc holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Konishi, Terukazu
Terukazu Konishi, the managing director of Moravia Worldwide's Japanese operations in Tokyo, has worked in the translation and localization industry since 1995. Terukazu holds an engineering degree in electronics and started his career with IBM as a customer engineer, responsible for the liaison between IBM's Japanese office and their development teams worldwide. After 12 years at IBM, he joined the Japanese service provider Human Science, where he established and managed the localization department for 10 years. At Moravia, Terukazu is now responsible for the strategic development of Moravia’s Japanese office as part of their Asia-Pacific operations. |

Maria Koroknay is a Training Consultant working for Dade-Behring, Inc., in Newark, Delaware, and has been involved in the medical laboratory industry for over 20 years. Maria started her career in research and development as a research chemist in method development and progressed to training and support. She holds a BS (MT) ASCP degree from Florida International University and an MS Ed in instructional design for online learning from Capella University. She has led several initiatives to develop distance educational and training programs for internal and external customers through the United States, Latin American and European countries. Currently, Maria is involved in developing an innovative performance support system for diagnostic instruments, a ground-breaking approach to just-in-time/on-demand knowledge transfer within the laboratory work environment. |

Bryan Schnabel is the XML Information Architect for Tektronix Inc. He is a seasoned XML practitioner. He embraces XML as a portable, scalable, platform, and vendor independent means to best utilize and protect a company's valuable data. Bryan began as an Information Architect in the Automotive Industry. He solved problems with standards based technology early on, first with SGML, then with XML. His accomplishments include serving on the J2008 Automotive Standard Committee, serving as Detroit Director of the Midwest SGML Forum, establishing and directing the OregonXML Forum, and serving on the OASIS XLIFF Technical Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master's degree from Central Michigan University. |

Nitish Singh is associate professor of marketing at California State University, Chico. He has a Ph.D. in both marketing and international business from Saint Louis University in the United States. He also has an MBA (India) and masters in marketing (U.K.) He teaches, consults and does research in the field of website localization, e-marketing and cross-cultural research. Willem Stoeller has been involved full-time in software localization since 1992. He has been directly or indirectly involved in project management his entire career. Willems project management "boot camp" consisted of ten years of IT projects through Andersen Consulting followed by senior software development management positions with several US software publishers. He is a certified project management professional and a board member of the Project Management Institute, Silicon Valley Chapter. He teaches localization principles at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. |

Natalia Tsvetkov is a lead Localization Program Manager at VMC, currently managing HP's international product launches of multiple products/divisions into 30+ target markets. She has more than twenty years of experience in the IT and localization industry, and has been a leading contributor of HP's content management process deployment. Natalia started her career as a translator and interpreter, then transitioned to project management. She has successfully delivered more than 50 complex products in 35 languages. She holds a BA in linguistics and MA in Italian, French and English as well as she has Business/Administration diploma. She is a member of ATA and STC. |

van den Tol, Peter
Peter van den Tol was born in 1976 in Rosenheim/Bavaria and grew up in Austria. After being a computer kid, he began his career in a small company developing software for financial businesses. In this time he found his second passion — electronics. He went to Germany to study automation technology. After graduation, he joined Krones AG, a filling machine builder with more than 8,800 people worldwide. Working for the service department he traveled around the globe to support Krones' worldwide installations. After moving to the technical information department, he brought up Krones' Intranet and selected a DMS (document management system) for OEM documents to support the service team. He developed a second platform called "The TechWeb," providing information to the worldwide service organization. He replaced the old Unix-CMS with a modern Windows-based system, achieving redesign to a completely new kind of customer-friendly documents. With a translation requirement into 28 languages, existing methods proved to be inefficient, and he introduced translation memory. After being promoted to head of technical documentation, he quickly identified the urgent need for translation process automation. He installed an industry-leading global information management solution and achieved a standardized process for in-time translations while reducing costs and improving quality. |

Jaap van der Meer is a member of the Localization World management team. A cofounder and director of the Translation Automation User Society (TAUS), he is also cofounder and partner of Cross Language. Jaap started his first translation company in The Netherlands in 1980, and in 1987 he published the first desktop translation memory software. Jaap cofounded the SAE TopTec Multilingual Communications Conference for the automotive industry and was president and CEO of ALPNET. |

Vitray, Kim
Kim Vitray is Operations Manager of McElroy Translation in Austin, Texas, and is also Administrator of the Translation Company Division of the American Translators Association. She has 18 years of experience in production and operations management in the fields of publishing and translation, and has presented and published on operational topics in various industry conferences and publications. In 1999, McElroy designed, developed, built, and implemented its electronic job tracking system, ELJOTS®, using Microsoft Access and inhouse talent. ELJOTS® has been instrumental in McElroy's ability to process and track a large volume of work and to set the standard for customer service and responsiveness. In 2005, ELJOTS® has been migrated to SQL Server and is undergoing a major upgrade, with rollout scheduled for mid-November. |

Wright, Sue Ellen
Sue Ellen Wright is chair of the ATA Terminology Committee and is an ATA-accredited translator (German-English). She is active in the national and international standards community (American Society for Testing and Materials and the International Organization for Standardization) and chairs the U.S. mirror committee (Technical Advisory Group) for ISO Technical Committee 37, Terminology and other language and content resources. She is a Professor of German and a member of the Kent State University Institute for Applied Linguistics, where she teaches computer applications for translators and German to English technical translation. She is the co-compiler (with Professor Gerhard Budin of the University of Vienna) of the Handbook for Terminology Management and the author of many articles on applied terminology management in industry. She is active as a terminology trainer and consultant for companies and institutions implementing terminology management. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Localisation Focus and of the Editorial Board for the John Benjamins Translation Library. |

Charles Wrobel completed his BS degree in computer science at the University of Illinois and his MS degree in computer science at DePaul University. Charles has been involved with internationalization and localization for 20 years and was assigned to the AT&T Bell Laboratories office in Tokyo from 1985 to 1995 where he worked on various internationalization projects. He continues to be an internationalization evangelist with Avaya. |

Franco Zearo is the worldwide director of language services with Lionbridge Technologies. He holds a degree in translation from the Advanced School of Modern Languages for Translators and Interpreters at the University of Trieste, Italy, and earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Before joining Lionbridge in 1996, he worked as a freelance technical and medical translator in Italian, English and Russian. At Lionbridge, he is responsible for quality assurance and process improvement for language services for all corporate offices worldwide, and he interacts daily with translation professionals in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He is ATA-certified (English-to-Italian).

Zetzsche, Jost
Jost Zetzsche is an ATA-accredited English-to-German translator and a localization and translation consultant. A native of Hamburg, Germany, Jost earned a Ph.D. in the field of Chinese translation history and linguistics in 1996. He began working in localization and technical translation in 1997 and in 1999 cofounded the International Writers' Group on the Oregon coast (www.internationalwriters.com). In 2003 he published a computer guide for translators and has distributed a biweekly technical newsletter for translators since the beginning of 2004. |
